This guy from Munson Industries in Venice Beach, Ca ,called us up and inquired if we were interested in doing a “Live Screenprinting Demonstration” at the local VANS Store in San Rafael. Zoltron, being the ambassador of good will said “HELL YEAH” – But you have got to include the legendary Ron Donovan, his excellent girlfriend LuLu and the textural psychedelic mad-man Gammalyte! So Zoltron started the art jam, basing it around his world-reknown “Mustache Guy” and passed the file onto me where I added the textural background, typography and design elements – bringing the print design up a few notches – then in deep cahoots with Ron, worked the color separations, bringing out the metallic golden under base to subtle but key magical levels to reside under Zoltron’s Red, which we distressed and other-wise F***ed up, bringing the aged and “forgotten, yet not” elements in to seamlessly meld w/the crumpled and casually yet firmly re-structured black plate. Without Further Adieu… “The Public Mind Dazed”
***The Metallic 14k gold and Custom Red layers were printed one day in advance at Hangar18 by a secret society of oil-based fume huffing psychopaths, whereas the final, waterbased black key plate was printed by Ron and many bravely excited kids in front of a sugar addicted crowd of children of all ages. All in all, VANs, Munson but most importantly the kids were very stoked to watch and participate in this nearly lost art-form. All the kids, even Jorge, Stocker Steve and his brother all walked away with free posters that day. Gammalyte, Zoltron and maybe even Ron each managed to walk away with a very small stack for days just like today!
We printed around a hundred +/-, with just a few variants on Red Vellum and maybe just 2-4 Sparkle Foisl that may or may not surface in exchange for more ink money in the not so distant future.
